Plagiarism Policy

Anti-Plagiarism Policy

The Editorial Board of SHINE: Journal of Special Needs, Holistic Interventions, and Neurodiversity in Education realises that plagiarism is an act that cannot be tolerated. Therefore, we set a clear policy regarding sanctions or actions that will be taken if plagiarism is found in the manuscript of articles submitted for publication. SHINE uses Turnitin software to detect similarities in article content, with a maximum tolerance limit of 15%.

Definition:

Plagiarism is the act of using or closely copying the language and ideas of another author, then presenting it as if it were one's own original work.

Policy:

All manuscripts submitted must be original, not previously published, and not in the process of publication elsewhere. Material from other sources that is directly quoted must be clearly signalled through (1) the use of a dedicated paragraph, (2) quotation marks, and (3) proper acknowledgement of the source.
Any quotations that exceed fair use standards (more than two or three sentences, or equivalent) as well as visual material such as figures or tables from other sources must be accompanied by permission from the copyright holder and, where possible, the original author.

Plagiarism Rate & Action:

  • Minor: Plagiarism is limited to a small section of the article without taking away the main data or ideas.
Action: Warning and request for revision with appropriate citation.
  • Moderate: Significant parts of the article are copied without adequate citation.
Action: Article rejected and author banned from submitting new articles for 1 year.
  • Severe: Plagiarism includes research results or original ideas from other works.
Action: The article is rejected and the author is banned from submitting articles for 5 years.

All authors in the manuscript are responsible for the content, and if sanctions are imposed, all authors will receive the same consequences. If a second case of the same author is found, the Editorial Board will consider a permanent ban on article submission.

About Use of Own Work:

Reuse of material from previous publications by the same author, including text and images, must be clearly annotated with permission from the publisher and/or original author. If the submitted manuscript bears substantial similarity to one submitted in another journal, and this is discovered during the review process or after publication, the case will be considered as severe plagiarism.

Reuse of Own Work and Multiple Publications:

If the submitted manuscript originates from a conference proceedings, the author should mention the name of the conference and the time of publication and obtain permission for republication. Manuscripts that are translations of works in other languages must cite the original publication and obtain copyright permission. The editor reserves the right to accept or reject the manuscript.

Editor's duties:

The layout editor is in charge of keeping a list of sanctioned authors and verifying whether there is a name in the submitted manuscript. If found, the Editor-in-Chief will take the necessary action.

Withdrawal and Correction of Articles:

The Editor of SHINE: Journal of Special Needs, Holistic Interventions, and Neurodiversity in Education may withdraw an article if:

  • There is evidence that the research results cannot be trusted (e.g. due to data fabrication or significant errors).
  • The article has been published elsewhere without proper reference and permission.
  • The article contains evidence of plagiarism.
  • The article reports research that violates ethics.

A Statement of Concern will be issued if:

  • The evidence of offence is not strong enough but there are suspicious indications.
  • The author's institution is not willing to investigate the case.
  • A fair and thorough investigation is not possible.
  • The investigation process is ongoing but will take a long time.

Article Corrections will be made if:

  • A small part of the publication is misleading due to an unintentional error.
  • The author list is inaccurate, e.g. an author is mistakenly listed or not listed.

This policy follows the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) which can be accessed via this link and are also listed below for your convenience.
